That astonishes me! You should start a website and nominate a 'charity', you could swipe a fortune off your easily impressed friends.

You raise many good points and the answer to your last question is: nothing. However, that too would become part of his 'running portfolio' and referred to in any story that might be written.
Are you suggesting that a story maybe is being written? It seems as though all of the signs point to yes. The "in the know people" on this thread have hinted as much. Isn't that all that is left to do on the story. If there are indeed more layers to this onion, then you write "Chapter 2 D.K.L. The Formative Years".
A story is in the works, yes. Thanks to everybody here for helping peel back the layers, as pathetic and incredible as they've been. The direction and flow of this story is incomplete. Patience will be rewarded.

I certainly hope a story or article on this issue does get published. I think Michigan Runner Magazine should put this on the cover, with the headline "How to catch a cheater". There are so many instances of his malfeasance that the author would likely struggle to keep it within the word count parameters!

As for any publication fearing a lawsuit by Kip for defamation, libel, etc., I suspect those odds are slim to none. First, truth is an absolute defense to defamation / libel claims, and it would appear there is no question he fabricated races, and was disqualified from certain events. Publishing the fact that he was disqualified is not defamation - you're simply reporting a decision made by a race director. Second, and most importantly, Kip would have to come forward with proof that what was written was untrue. He would have to explain - with credibility and specificity - that he did indeed run the full course, why he was entered under false names, changed his clothes, is absent from pictures, etc. The detectives on this board did such a great job uncovering his fraud that it would be almost comical to watch Kip try and support his claim that he was defamed.

And just because his wife is an attorney doesn't mean he's got a free ticket to sue. I'm guessing he's kept this entire thing from his spouse entirely under wraps. If he wants to make a case out of it, he's going to have to let his wife know about all of this, and if she has an ounce of common sense, she'll see that he's not only been scamming the running community, but her as well.

My advice: write that story and hit the print key!

Dunno. But it does bring up a question. By linking and posting that on their site, does the CF foundation now actually have an obligation to look into potential fraud by someone they "publicized" for lack of a better word.

That site is still up because Kip is CLEARLY achieving his goal which is:

Kip Litton is running marathons in all 50 states to help raise awareness and funds for Cystic Fibrosis.

Doesn't mention anything about running the whole course, finishing under 3 hrs, or changing clothes, riding bikes, driving cars or anything else he is probably doing during the marathon.

And he has certainly raised awareness for CF on this boards hasn't he?

But I'm still not going to donate....

The reporter has very little say in what stories go in the paper. That decision is up to the editorial board. The reporter can pitch a story, but the whole "cheating at road races" angle probably doesn't rise to high in your normal editorial board's interest level particularly if they don't think the general public will understand it. The original story was your typical feel-good special interest story. The rebuttal means trying to explain splits and clothing changes to people that quite frankly don't give a rip. It could come down to something as simple as the editor not wanting to pay the guy to research and write the story. If it could be proved he actually defrauded a charity or did something that rises to a wider interest I'm sure it would come back on the radar, but the race cheating angle isn't really a hot topic in your average mid-market newspaper.

First, the "editorial board" is a group of people, usually newspaper employees but sometimes it includes folks from the general public, who determine the newspaper's stance on issues addressed in editorials.

Speaking of Journalism 101, an editorial is opinion and a newspaper story is fact.

If the general public wouldn't understand or have interest in a story, it's often the paper's job to clearly explain it and give background to show why the story is newsworthy.

There are plenty of issues and angles on this for the Flint Journal to address. The Journal is part of the Advance newspaper chain and it is a pretty solid group.

Got a reply - it'll go a long way towards dispelling questions/concerns about Kip's charity drive.

'We appreciate your concern but please rest assured that the only web page that was available to accept donations to Kip Litton's fundraising belonged to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. As such, any donations contributed in support of Mr Litton would have been received directly by the CF Foundation. To our knowledge, Mr Litton has not received any donations intended for the CF Foundation directly.

This adds some serious clarity to any future investigations of Kip & charity money.

Basically, they are saying they have received $0 pass-through from Kip.

So, if anyone gave money to Kip in the past for the "charity", we now know he kept it.

I would suggest any future article(s) about Kip include a note to the effect of "if you gave any money directly to Kip or "worldrecordrun" intended for the CF, please contact us..."
