Odd that almost no one in the WWM ran to the finish line with someone. Almost every single runner was in no man's land.

How rude!

Now here's a real coincidence

1. Go to google and type the following in the search box
cache:www.westwyomingmarathon.com/2010%20West%20Wyoming%20Marathon%20Race%20Results.pdf

This takes you to the results page that originally appeared on the WWM site. It's an HTML version that google made.

2. Now view the HTML source. In Internet Explorer 8, you go to the "Page" menu and then select "View Source".

Who do you see listed as the author on line 6? Isn't that the author of the Sandy Springs Half Marathon results? (see previous post by 'Whoomp there it is')

I just sent an e-mail to Marathon Guide informing them that they have been duped into posting results for races that never existed and suggesting that they read through this thread starting on page 14. Gotta imagine they'll be pretty damned surprised.

Also odd: both the race director at WWM and the race director at Sandy Springs have generic @live email addresses with their middle initial and last name in it.

I sent an e-mail (read below from bottom up) to a person named Richard Rodriguez, who was identified in July on as the race director for the West Wyoming Marathon on its web site. At the time, I had no reason to suspect that West Wyoming wasn't one of Litton's legit marathons. Now I'm not so sure.

Having spoken to a lot of race directors and even to a guy whose business it is to run chip timing at Montana races, I have discovered that the chip mats are incredibly sensitive. One of the officials at the Missoula Marathon told me that he was at the 6am start with a runner's chip that had been found on the ground at the registration area the day before so that he could give it to him at the start. When he couldn't find the runner, he put it in his pocket. Later that day, he was on a scaffolding "sky bridge" over the fiish line helping with the announcing. Even though he was 20' up in the air, the chip mat still recorded multiple finishes of the chip in his pocket every time he moved. From this observation, I am pretty sure that all Litton has to do is get close to the mat and it will register that he crossed.

So I am convinced that Litton has probably used multiple methods to get his chip to register on the chip mats throughout the course. At Missoula, I'm convinced that he simply drove over the chip mats, since the course wasn't closed to traffic.

Here's the e-mail exchange from July with Richard Rodriguez (possible an alias for Kip Litton):

Dear xxx,
Wow, that's quite a scenario! It would have been very unlikely for the same thing to have happened at our race, as there were only 30 participants and the lead 2 runners ran almost the entire race together. I have not received any complaints. I will keep my ears open though. If there is an update, send it my way. Take care,
Richard

Hi - I'm writing to ask about the winner of your marathon a few weeks ago, Kip Litton. He was recently disqualified from the Deadwood Mickelson Trail Marathon for cheating (not running the whole course. He is currently being investigated at the Missoula Marathon, where he apparently finished 6th, but likely did the same thing. I don't know the guy - I just hate cheating in running. I wonder whether he may have had a legitimate performance at your race or whether he may also have cheated in Wyoming.

Perhaps I'll make it down there for the race in a year or two!

Hit the view source of the rrrodriguez email and see where the originating IP address is from... probably Michigan.

The reason for so many domains poiting to the same IP:
Cheap webspace is always on a "shared host". This means you do not have a webserver, but you rent some GB on a webserver. I believe thta sub-par webdesigner is not capable of administrating an own webserver, so (e.g. for security reasons) he relies on "shared hosting". Nothing wrong with that.

1and1 then routes requests for "his" domains to a folder on one of their servers, with a "quota"-limit of the alloted GB in size.

The webserver software, e.g. "Apache", knows how to recognize domain-specific requests. It acts as a "virtual host", instead of ye olde ways where the domain name system routed http requests to a default folder on a server-identified-by-an-IP.

NEVERTHELESS these source-code hints of meta-tag-author and software used are sufficiently convincing.
Just don't waste time with all the non-running content, I'd say this is explainably irrelevant.

Possible, but unlikely. Less impossible is he bought a computer containing the software from him with access to his "Documents and Settings"-User.

I did not check th software that was used, but these settings are
a) entered by the oh-so-proud webdesigner into the software and
b) stored in that particular users "Documents and Settings" (sub)folder.

More likely it is another fake name. A web designer oh-so-proud-with-author-meta-tag (almost as lame as Comic Sans Serif type) will also proudly shows his client list online -- there is no convincing list of him anywhere.
(Even more, who in the business has in 2010+ not written an own shinycontentmanagmentsystem?)

Anybody dare to guess how many fake friend our serial cheater has on FB?

another interesting note is the dates when those race files were created:

Dec 24 - if i were a depressed person or someone who run a business and needed to find one day whre i had time to sit down at the computer to do this - the day before Chrismas is a pretty interesting one - the office would probably be closed...

The timing also matches the period when the "Kip Litten Returns" thread was active on letsrun - from google cache we can see people posting in the first page of that thread on the 17th and 18th of December, so that might have been motivation to create those pages.

Perhaps the "race director" decided it was a good time to document those races.

Quick database searches, for what it's worth: There is no Donna Dixon, between ages 37-39, living in a 30-mile radius of San Francisco. ... There are several Sue or Susan Johnsons, between ages 28-31, in a 30-mile radius of Minneapolis ... Kevin Leddy actually exists. Direct hit on him.

Help me!! I have some good crack cocaine to smoke, and I can't seem to tear myself away from this thread to get my fix. Seriously, this is the most bizarre running story I have ever read by an order of magnitude. I can't imagine that Running Times or Runner's World wouldn't pick this up - or at least the Weekly World News!

A recent poster mentioned that they e-mailed the CFF chapter. Someone needs to call Cathy Zell, the Director. Perhaps I need to stop waiting for the next post and actually do it myself. I haven't left my computer in three days, so it would be good for me...

It feels like there will be a giant twist in the end - like in a Paul Auster novel when everything becomes clear with a wicked turn o' the world.

Let's hope it doesn't involve a glock.

What do you bet this guy starts going by "david" in a big hurry. This will distance him professionally from his scams.

I think an interesting investigation could be made into whether or not he was skimming donations on worldrecordrun. i.e. passing only a portion of donations on to CFF. Looks like a any other scam - works great for a while but it keeps getting more and more tangled to keep it going. (Gotta feed the monkey, man) Then all of the sudden it unravels. (I would have gotten away with it if it wasn't for those meddling LRers!)

Well the html code was generated automatically by google from the pdf that was on the website (you can see the original link is to a pdf). So no, I don't think html was copied by anyone. Also other tags in the html source show that Word 2007 was used. So maybe it was composed in Word and then saved to a pdf file? If that is the case, then the author info probably comes from what was entered as a name when Word was installed on the computer. I guess the main point is this name connects two different "low key local races" which really should have nothing to do with eachother, and the name is also connected to KL (based on what others have said about a facebook connection) and Davison (based on google search).

Obviously someone with a website soliciting donations for his marathon quest isn't bashful. You would think somewhere during the year he'd mention his quest on FB. Or mention each marathon he runs, you know especially one he won.

For the amount of detail you can find about his summer trip (which does appear to have been in and around WY in July) I didn't see anything about running a marathon.

Pretty sure that if I was on vacation and took the time to mention having a snowball fight in the summer I just might mention WINNING a marathon during the same trip.
